Purpose
The Family Literacy Alliance of Greater Syracuse
(FLAGS) is a collaboration of individuals from
more
than 70 organizations that provide family literacy
services in Greater Syracuse. The Alliance’s
purpose is to improve the availability of comprehensive
quality literacy services for children and adults.
Members work both collectively and individually
to identify the needs of organizations and agencies
and to support improved literacy services. |

“Family Literacy”
Defined
Family Literacy programs aim to improve the literacy
skills of parents and children in order to create sustainable
family changes. The four components of Family Literacy
are
- adult education,
- developmentally appropriate childhood
education,
- parenting education, and
- parent-child interactive literacy activities.
Family Literacy and
FLAGS
FLAGS member organizations provide services across the
components of family literacy. One member may have a
full-scale comprehensive family literacy program, like
Even Start, while another may focus solely on adult
basic education. FLAGS serves to improve literacy services
overall, recognizing that literacy is important all
along the lifespan.
Objectives
- Expand partnerships and broaden support
to advance literacy.
- Identify potential funding sources
and develop potential funding proposals.
- Increase awareness and education in
literacy to FLAGS members and the greater community
- Collect and disseminate state and national
data, research and best practices.
- Establish a system of community standards
and outcomes for literacy.
Funding
In 2004, FLAGS was awarded a renewable multi-year grant
from the Central New York Community Foundation to hire
a part-time coordinator to advance the work of the Alliance.
