Membership
FLAGS is open to anyone – volunteers, staff, educators,
administrators – in the Greater Syracuse area
who is interested in improving literacy services for
children, adults, and families. Benefits of membership
include: monthly updates on literacy topics and grant
availability; access to a network of literacy advocates
and experts; opportunities to collaborate with other
individuals or organizations to implement special projects;
and training.
Steering Committee
The Alliance’s steering committee is composed
of members whose work aligns with one or more of the
four components of family literacy, including adult
education, early childhood education, parenting, and
parent and child activities. The steering committee
meets four times per year, and the full Alliance meets
twice per year. Work groups meet on an as-needed basis.
History
flags History
FLAGS began in 1999 when the staff
of Success By 6 convened a meeting of adult literacy
providers, childcare providers, Head Start employees,
Pre-Kindergarten personnel and interested community
members to discuss how to positively affect literacy
rates in Central New York. Approximately 60 people attended
the meeting, and subsequent meetings led to the creation
of the Literacy Collaboration. In 2001, the Collaboration
was invited to become the eleventh alliance under the
umbrella of the New York State Family Literacy Alliance.
The group adopted its name shortly thereafter.
The formation of the Alliance has led
to collaborative projects and successful grant applications
to improve and expand literacy services. Additionally,
several organizations have adopted literacy initiatives,
which have collectively advanced the quality of literacy
services in the community.
