Progress/Affiliations
The Alliance’s notable accomplishments
include:
- Expanded staff development opportunities,
including: a Basic Foundations in Family Literacy
training which has now reached 39 staff from organizations
throughout the county; a half-day workshop entitled
“Building Blocks to Literacy”; Profitability
through Basic Skills, offered by CNY Staff Development
and the CNY Chapter of American Society for Training
and Development; a “Culturally Responsive Teaching”
workshop presented by the Bilingual Education and
Technical Assistance Center; a “Literacy and
Technology” workshop with the Mid-State RAEN;
and presentations at two Child Care Directors’
Association meetings.
- Developed and distributed educational
and awareness materials including: books and literacy
activities through the establishment of ten new Family
Literacy Resource Centers; a guide to local cultural
awareness training opportunities; and 88 copies of
the I Am Your Child “Ready to Learn” videos,
which were placed in pediatric, family practice, and
obstetric offices, hospital clinics and County Health
Department offices.
- Promoted organizational changes that
encouraged the Child Care Council of Onondaga County
to redesign trainings to incorporate early literacy
development and add a 15-hour course on literacy development
and prompted P.E.A.C.E. to incorporate family literacy
concepts into its Family Development Credential training.
- Attracted new funding to support literacy
activities, including: two Workforce Investment Act
(WIA) grants; Reading for Results; Even Start; and
smaller capacity building grants
- Sponsored activities to encourage
family reading, including: the Success By 6 Children’s
Book Fest; backpack project; Family Nights curriculum;
and book drives.
FLAGS Affiliations

The Family Literacy Alliance of Greater
Syracuse is a member of the New York State Alliance
for Family Literacy, a partnership of state and local
organizations formed to strengthen and grow the system
of high quality family literacy services across New

FLAGS is also a member of the Family Literacy
Alliance of the National Center for Family Literacy.
This allows us to learn the latest information about
family literacy, share ideas with family literacy practitioners
from across the country, and to keep abreast of family

On the local level, FLAGS is an active
partner with read ahead, a literacy initiative of the
Central New York Community Foundation.
